Verification

How to read references, including other companies'

References are often the weakest evidence in an entire offer, because they are the easiest to write yourself. A few things help you tell the credible ones from the rest. It is worth applying this test to us as well.

Is there a company name and the person's full name, not just an initial
Can the company and the person be found independently
Is the document available in full, or only as a quote
Is the described scope specific, or does it boil down to “professionalism”
Do public reviews come from different months, or from a single week
Does the company reply to reviews, including critical ones

The simplest check

Ask the provider for the phone number of one of the clients in the references. A reliable company has no problem with this, although it will usually ask the client for permission first. A refusal with no explanation is a reason to be careful.
